Wayne D. Williams Sr, 76, 543 Front
Street, Rensselaer Falls, died May 3, 2003, at
Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. The funeral
will be Wednesday, May 7, at the Rensselaer Falls United
Methodist Church at 11:30 with Rev. Helen Hadley, pastor
officiating. Burial will be in Rensselaer Falls Cemetery, a
reception will follow at the Rensselaer Falls Fire Dept.
Calling hours will be Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 at the Lawrence
Funeral Home in Canton. Contributions may be made to the
Rensselaer Falls Volunteer Fire Station, P.O. Box 186,
Rensselaer Falls, New York, 13680. Surviving are his wife,
Janet, four sons, Wayne D. Williams Jr. Fort Wayne, Indiana,
Marty L. Williams, Portland, Maine, Gregg P. and Anne Williams ,DeKalb
Jct., Scott A. and Dianne Williams ,New Port Richey, Florida,
four daughters and son in laws, Karen Y. and Roger Conant,

Greg Tracy, Heuvelton, Sheli A. and Alonzo “Wayne” Ellison
Jr., Canton; ten sisters, Mrs. Connie Cashman, Oxford, Ruth and
Charles Diefenbacher, Oxford, Shirley Adams, Texas, Marilyn and
Dick Moore, Florida, Myrna Dumond, Oxford, Beverly and Robert
Black, Ocala, FL; Muriel & Fred Matteson, Florida; Thelma
& David Robinson, Oxford; Viola and Donald Reko, Kansas City
Mo; Catherine and Ed Wilk, Oxford; three brothers Donald A.
Williams , Oxford, George D. and Laurie Williams, Sherburne,
David F. and Bonnie Williams, Missouri; Sixteen grandchildren,
three great grand children, several nieces and nephews.
Predeceasing him is a brother Lee Miles Williams. Born
July 13, 1926, in Oxford, New York, a son of Lee Augustus and
Edna Elizabeth Miles Williams, he graduated from Oxford Academy
in 1943, he the enlisted in the U S Army during WWII, after the
war Mr. Williams worked as a store manager for Acme Food Store
on Court Street, Canton also was the manager of the meat Dept.
for Acme stores in Ogdensburg, Gouverneur and Watertown for 33
years until the company closed the northern region. He then went
to work as a clerk for St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office,
He then worked as a corrections officer as the St. Lawrence
County Correctional Facility for 10 years retiring in
1996. Mr. Williams was a member if the St. Lawrence Co
Fire Police ,Rensselaer Falls Volunteer Fire & Rescue Inc.
for nearly 30 years, were he served as bingo chairman for 25
years, member of the St. Lawrence County Fire Chiefs
Association, New York State American Legion, Rensselaer Falls
United Methodist Church, and a past member of the Boy Scout
Council. Mr. Williams enjoyed bowling at Gray Lanes in Canton,
stamp and coin collecting and playing the piano.

Funeral for Rev. Everet Kendall Scouten,
92, 56 State Street, Canton, will be Wednesday, May
7, 2003 at
1:00 at the Canton United Methodist Church, with Rev. James M.
Brand, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Canton United Methodist
Church. There will be no public calling hours. If friends desire
contributions may be made to the Canton United Methodist Church
in memory of Rev. Scouten. Arrangements are with the
Lawrence Funeral Home. Surviving Rev. Scouten are two
daughters Susan E. Scouten, Canton, Mary Ellen Bohm and her
husband Robert, Knoxville, Tennessee, two sons, Wesley G. and
his wife JoRetha, Smithburg, Maryland and Alan and his wife
Margaret Charlottesville, Virginia, eight (8) grandchildren and
one great grandchild, one sister Lillian Hogle and her husband
Roy, Knoxville, Tenn., and nieces and nephews.
Predeceasing Rev. Scouten are two sisters Julia Sherman and Jean
Scouten and two brothers, Gilbert Scouten and Wesley Gray
Scouten. Born on June 6, 1910 in Morristown, he was the
son of Roy William and Lelah Maude Loveless Scouten and
graduated from Bellville Union Academy in 1927. In 1934 he
received his Masters degree from Boston University School of
Theology . On July 27, 1935, he married Marion Ella Steves at
the home of her parents in Needham Heights, Massachusetts. Mrs.
Scouten died April 20, 2002. Together, Rev. Scouten and his wife
served parishes in Chartley, Massachusetts, before returning to
New York State to serve in Parish, Newport, Minetto, Beaver
Falls, Willowvale, Sandy Creek, Ogdensburg and finally the
Malone United Methodist Church, from which he retired in
1975. The couple moved to Annapolis, Maryland, where they
resided for 26 years, before moving to Canton in 1999 to be near
their daughter Susan and lived at the Partridge Knoll retirement
residence. Rev. Scouten was an avid outdoorsman and an FAA
Licensed Airplane Pilot. While living in Ogdensburg, he owned
several airplanes, one of which was a float plane. He was a
member of the Malone Flying Club. A member of the Northern New
York Conference of the United Methodist Church, he served as
chairman for the committee for ecumenical concerns and then the
Nominating Committee for Conference Trustees.

D. Jean Thompson, 79, 269 Cowan Road,
Canton, died February 14, 2003 at her home in Canton.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 20 at 7
p.m. at the Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. James M.
Brand officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in the
Spring. There will be no calling hours. If friends so desire,

Thompson, Foxboro, MA; Rick Thompson, Lake Clear, NY; David
Thompson, Canton; a brother & sister-in-law, William E.
& Marcia Reimann, Rensselaer, NY; a sister &
brother-in-law, William & Sandra Staats, East Greenbush, NY,
ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, five nieces and
five nephews. Born May 2, 1923, in Albany, New York, a daughter
of Edwin & Mildred Page Ostrander, she attended Castleton
High School. In September 1939, she married Ross Comstock in
Castleton, New York. Mr. Comstock died July 17, 1941. On August
7, 1943 she married Stanley Thompson in East Greenbush, NY. Mr.
Thompson died April 3, 1993. Mrs. Thompson started her
employment working at General Electric in Schenectady from 1941
through 1943. After moving to Canton, she was employed at Canton
Central School as a Cafeteria worker from 1956-1963. From
1956-1983 as a well-known cake decorator, she touched the hearts
of many people making wedding and birthday cakes. She was an
active member of the Canton United Methodist Church and was part
of the Canton United Methodist Church Choir for nearly 40 years.

Irene A. Coughlin, 91, 37 Riverside
Drive, Canton, died February 13, 2003 at the
Whiteford Adult Home in North Russell, where she had been a
resident for a year. Funeral services will be held Friday,
February 21 at 2 p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton
with Rev. James M. Brand officiating. A luncheon at the Canton
United Methodist Church will follow the funeral service. Friends
may call at the funeral home on from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.
Spring burial will be in Beech Plains Cemetery. If friends so
desire, contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Lawrence

Church , Court Street, Canton, 13617. Surviving are two
daughters, Mrs. Nelson (Rogene) Bessette and Mrs. Naomi Haven,
both of Canton; a sister, Elnora Rood, Hermon; nine
grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren; three great great
grandchildren; twenty-one nieces and fifteen nephews.
Predeceasing Mrs. Coughlin are her husband George L. Coughlin, a
son George D.; two grandsons, Roger Bessette and Jere Haven; a
son-in-law, Herbert Haven; three brothers Andrew, Claude &
Fulton; three sisters Leda Baumgartner; Wava Coller; Cecile
White; one niece and two nephews. Born April 11, 1911 in West
Pierrepont, New York, a daughter of Nelson & Lula Fulton
Caswell, she graduated from Canton High School in 1928 and later
from Madame Hudson School of Beauty Culture in Albany. On March
8, 1930, she married George W. Lyon Coughlin at the First
Presbyterian Church in Evans Mills with Rev. James H. Keeling
officiating. The couple celebrated their 55th wedding
anniversary together on March 9, 1985 with an open house in the
recreation room of the building. Mr. Coughlin died in November
of1987. Mrs. Coughlin after graduating from the Madame Hudson
School of Beauty was a self-employed hairdresser in Lowville in
the 1930's. In the late 1940's until 1954, she was employed as a
secretary for the St. Lawrence County 4-H office in Canton for
eight years prior to be becoming a secretary for Bowers and
Howard and later Howard and Duskas Law office from 1957 until
retiring in 1972. Mrs. Coughlin was active member of the United
Methodist Women & Go-Givers; Canton Senior Citizens, Order
of Eastern Stars-Empire Chapter #68; St. Lawrence County
Historical Association; Beech Plains Ladies Aid; AARP; Head
Injury Group; Lift Group and a past member of Leader of Busy
Beavers 4-H Club, TOPS NY No 487 and the St. Lawrence County
Home Bureau. Her hobbies included playing pinochle, pedro,
bingo, writing poetry and genealogy studies.

Charles S. McEwen, 95, 773 Howardville
Road, Canton, died April 27, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at
the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. William Hart,
Officiating. Calling hours will be Tuesday afternoon and evening
from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The Pierrepont
Fire Department will be conducting a service at 8 p.m at the
Lawrence Funeral Home. Burial will be in Beech Plains Cemetery.

Department Ambulance Fund, PO Box 304, Colton, 13625 or to the
Pierrepont Fire Department, PO Box 386, Canton, 13617. Surviving
are his wife, Jane; a daughter, Sharon and her husband Robert
Camp, Canton; two grandsons, Randy & Steve and one
grand-daughter, Kathy; four great grandchildren; and several
nieces and nephews. Mr. McEwen is predeceased by two brothers,
Conrad & Homer and six sisters, Ruth, Hazel, Muriel,
Albertine, Drusilla, and Violet. Born March 16, 1908, in Colton,
New York, the son of Samuel Nelson & Cora Elsie (Daniels)
McEwen, he attended area rural schools including the Howardville
Rural School. On December 21, 1936, he married E. Jane Stone in
the Methodist Church Parsonage in Potsdam with Rev. Carter
Officiating. Mr. McEwen owned and operated the family dairy farm
from 1936 until a fire destroyed the dairy barn in 1971. He
assisted Roger Huntley with cattle auctions, operated a 3000
tree sugar bush, and drove milk truck for over 30 years. In
1943, he served as the Town of Pierrepont Justice and from
1944-1971 he was the Town of Pierrepont Councilman. Mr. McEwen
was the last surviving charter member of the Pierrepont Fire
Department, a past member of the Crary Mills Grange, and a
member of the St. Lawrence Lodge #111, Free and Accepted Masons.
Mr. McEwen was an avid gardener, hunter and enjoyed spending
time with his family.

William J. Hayes, 60, of 29 Post Road,
Canton, died Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Fletcher Allen
Health Care in Burlington, Vermont. Funeral services will be
held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home in
Canton with Rev. James M. Brand officiating. Burial will be in
Crary Mills Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday evening from
6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday afternoon and evening 2 to 4 & 6 to 8
p.m. at the funeral home. There will be a service held at 7:45
p.m. Tuesday evening at the Lawrence Funeral Home with the
Pierrepont Fire Department and St. Lawrence County Fire Police

his mother, Mrs. Vivian Hayes, Crary Mills; his companion, Betty

Mills; two sisters, Judith "Judy" Martin and her
husband Frank; Lisbon; Cynthia Sullivan, West Potsdam; four
grand-daughters, Kimberly Hayes, Canton, Bobbijean and Cheyanne
Rafter both of Madrid, Chelsea Sharlow. Potsdam and one
grandson, William Hayes, Madrid and several nieces and nephews.
Born September 6, 1942, in Canton he was a son of Bernard James
and Vivian Ruth Clark Hayes. He graduated from Canton Central
High School. A marriage to Gloria Day ended in divorce. After
school, Mr. Hayes worked for Jerry Ames at Ames Motors and then
Gale Brothers Garage on the Potsdam Road. In the late 1960?s and
70?s he worked for Witherbee & Whalen Vault Co. in Canton.
He later was employed with Judson Heights Dairy where he
continued his employment until 1983 when a truck accident forced
him to retire due to his disability. For approximately the last
10 years, Mr. Hayes has worked as a driver for the St. Lawrence
County Office for the Aging. Mr. Hayes was a past member of the
Stag Hunting Club and was instrumental in the formation and
founding member of the Tri-Town Community Center in Crary Mills.
He was an active member in both the Pierrepont Fire Department
and the St. Lawrence County Fire Police Association.

Nettie P. St. Louis, 86, 25 Wells
Street, Canton, died Wednesday morning April 2, 2003
at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where she had been a patient since
Monday, March 31, 2003. The funeral will be Saturday morning at
10:00 at the Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. James M. Brand,
pastor Canton United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will
be in Union Cemetery in DeKalb. Calling hours will be Friday
afternoon and evening 2-4 and 6-8 at the Lawrence Funeral Home.

grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Henry
Alvin (Macey) Davis, Canton, Ruth Poor, Rensselaer Falls, one
brother, Raymond Mouthorp, Canton, and several nieces and
nephews. Predeceasing Mrs. St. Louis are two brothers John and
Ralph Mouthorp and two sisters Mary Mouthorp and Melva Crump.
Born April 16, 1916 in DeKalb Jct., she was a daughter of John
Raymond and Ruth May Newman Mouthorp. She graduated from Canton
High School and then attended Potsdam Normal School. On October
3, 1936, she married Avery Adolphus St. Louis in the Canton
United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Canter, officiating.
Mr. St. Louis died February 18, 1998. Mr. And Mrs. St. Louis
operated dairy farms in the Canton area for many years and lived
at Pink Schoolhouse corners. She held various employment, but
retired in 1984 from the College Association at SUNY Canton
Chaney Dining Hall, after 20 years of service. She was a
dedicated correspondent, and her interests were her friends and
family.

Margaret L. Munson, 83, Irish
Settlement Road, Canton, died Thursday morning, March
27, 2003 at the home of her daughter, Linda Goodale, in
Florence, Alabama. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at
11:00 at the First Baptist Church of Canton with Rev. Frederick
Sykes, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Fair
View Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8
p.m. at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton. If friends desire

are three children, a son, Newton J.,Williamsburg, VA; two

& Hollis Brown, Canton, NY; six grandchildren; two great
grandsons and several nieces and nephews. Predeceasing Mrs.
Munson are two sisters, Mrs. Marion Cassens, Mrs. Mildred Murray
and a brother, Lloyd. Born July 12, 1919, in Canton, a
daughter of Leon D. & Harriet A. (Shaw) Brown, she graduated
from Canton Central School in 1935. She later graduated in 1939
from Potsdam Normal School and received her teacher's
certification and then in the 1960's earned a Bachelors Degree
from Potsdam State College. On November 7, 1942 she married
Horace E. Munson in the Baptist Church in Potsdam. Mr. Munson
died June 19, 1989. Mrs. Munson was employed as a First Grade
teacher at Canton Central Schools & area rural schools for
18 years. After retiring from teaching, the Munsons owned &
operated the "Home Decorator Shop" in Canton and
Potsdam for 20 years. She was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Canton.

Ann L. Richardson, 59, 21 Goodrich
Street, Canton. A memorial service will be
Monday, March 31, 2003 at 11:00 at the Unitarian Universalist
Church, with Rev. Wade Wheelock and Rev. Anne Marsh officiating.
Mrs. Richardson died on March 27, 2003 at Canton Potsdam
Hospital. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 PM
and 6 to 8 PM at the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton. If friends

Park Street, Canton or to the Church and Community Worker
program, c/o First Presbyterian Church, Park Place, Canton.
Surviving are her husband David H., Canton; three daughters;
Sara Ricalton and her husband Alan of Natural Bridge, NY,
Jennifer Richardson and her husband George Jaquette, Cambridge,
Mass., and Lori Richardson, Rochester, NY; one son, John, a
student at St. Lawrence University and three brothers; John,
Brantingham Lake, NY; Edward, Waldorf, Maryland; and Stephen,
Montgomery, Texas. She is also survived by three grandchildren;
Maria & Darren Ricalton, Natural Bridge and Owen Richardson-Jaquette,
Cambridge, Mass as well as several nieces and nephews. Born on
January 3, 1944, in Lowville, New York, a daughter of Robert and
Dorothea Lormore, she graduated from Lowville Free Academy in
1961. Mrs. Richardson received her Bachelor of Science Degree
from the State University College at Potsdam in 1965. She lived
in West Lafayette, Indiana, Lawrence, Kansas, Lexington,
Kentucky, and Kuala, Malaysia, before moving to Canton in1979.
She married David on August 22, 1964 at the First Methodist
Church in Lowville, New York. Mrs. Richardson taught elementary
school in Indiana and did volunteer work with developmentally
disabled adults in Lawrence, Kansas. She was a Board Member and
President of the Friends of the Canton Free Library. She served
as Trustee for the Benton Board of the Canton Free Library and
the E. J. Noble Hospital Guild. She was a member of the Canton
Garden Club and member and President of the Canton Study Club.
Mrs. Richardson was a member of the Unitarian Universalist
Church. Mrs. Richardson was a devoted wife and mother who
enjoyed hiking and kayaking at the family camp in Cranberry
Lake, NY.

Herman W. Kalberer, 64, 375 Judson
Street Road, Canton, died Saturday, March 8th, 2003
at Canton-Potsdam Hospital Emergency Room. A celebration of his
life reception will be held Thursday, March 13, at 12:30 p.m. at
Canton College of Technology in the New Campus Center Room
218-220. Parking will be available in Lot 13 for this function.
There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the Spring. If
friends so desire, contributions maybe made to the Hahn-Kalberer
Scholarship, c/o Canton College of Technology, Cornell Drive,
Canton, New York 13617. Surviving are a brother, Walter, Lake
Ronkankama, New York, several nieces and a nephew, and his many
good friends & students. Born March 3, 1939 in Queens, New
York, a son of Gottlob H. and Bertha (Hahn) Kalberer. Mr.
Kalberer graduated from Charlotte Valley Central School in
Davenport, New York in 1957. In 1957, he moved to Canton and
attended St. Lawrence University earning his BS in Chemistry in
1961. He later earned his Master's Degree in Chemistry at the
University of Pacific in Stockton, California and began his long
& distinguished career at SUNY Canton as part of the Science
faculty from September 1, 1962 until July 14, 1999. During his
employment at Canton College, he was the chairman of the
Physical Sciences Department from July 1, 1974 through June 30,
1977 and was a member of the Canton College Foundation. His
impact on the academic excellence was so great that his name was
the first selected for the new tradition of naming the College's
Honors Convocation for a faculty emeritus each year. As a
faculty member, he taught his students not only the fundamentals
of chemistry, but also how to think critically, how to reason,
and how to read and follow directions. All useful skills for
responsible citizenship in our ever changing technology based
society. In his many years of service to Canton College, Mr.
Kalberer served as the Director of the College Foundation Board
for 24 years, chairperson of the SUNY Canton Curriculum
Committee, acted as President for two terms of the New York
State Two Year Chemistry Teachers Association, co-advised the
Phi Theta Kappa, Coordinated the Campus Lecture series, and
worked as a chemical technician at Kodak during the summers. In
1987, he received the Distinguished Faculty Award. His hobbies
included gardening, entertaining, travel, making shaker
furniture, wallpapering, fine dining and using his computer.

Theodore Frederick "Fritz"
Renick, 75, 23 Farmer Street, Canton. A memorial
service will be held on Saturday March 15, at 11:00 at the First
Presbyterian Church of Canton with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro,
pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in
Petersburg, Illinois. Mr. Renick died Saturday March 1, 2003 at
St. Joseph?s Hospital in Syracuse. Mr. Renick and his wife were
in Syracuse airport preparing to leave for a Caribbean cruise
when he was stricken. There will be no calling hours. If

to North Country Public Radio for the Fritz Renick Memorial Fund
at St. Lawrence University, Canton, 13617. Arrangements are with
the Lawrence Funeral Home. Mr. Renick was a professor emeritus
of education at St. Lawrence University and a jazz musician. He
retired from St. Lawrence in 1989. He was born July 14, 1927 in
Danville, Illinois, the son of George Thomas and Mary Alice
Logan Renick. He graduated from Danville High School in 1946. He
earned the bachelor of education degree at Western Illinois
University in 1950, his master's degree at the University of
Illinois in 1955. In 1961 he was awarded the Ed.D degree at the
University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. Mr. Renick married
Wanda Jean Ritterbush on October 7, 1950 at the Bethlehem
Lutheran Church in Petersburg, Illinois. He had a brief period
of service in the U.S. Army at Camp Pickett, Virginia in
1950-51. His long teaching career began in 1951 when he became
principal of the elementary school and taught fifth and sixth
grades in Girard, Ill. He later moved to Thayer, Ill., where he
was principal and taught seventh and eighth grades. He became
counselor and assistant to the superintendent at the community
high school in Virden, Ill. It was during this period that he
was working toward his master?s degree. While working toward his
doctoral degree he served as a counselor at the University High
School in Urbaba, Ill. In 1961, the Renicks moved to Syracuse,
where he was appointed assistant professor in the counseling
department of the School of Education at Syracuse University.
They moved to Canton in 1966 when Mr. Renick was named associate
professor of education, teaching councseling courses. He was
promoted to full professor at St. Lawrence in 1976 and served as
a chairman of the education department for several years. During
this period Mr. Renick became a licensed psychologist and
maintained a small private practice in addition to his teaching
and writing and editing articles for professional journals.
Besides his career in education, Mr. Renick was a practicing
jazz musician. He played acoustic bass in dance bands in the
Midwest and Plains states, helping to put himself through
college with his earnings. He is best known locally as an
original member of the North Country Preservation Jazz Band,
which has played during the summers at the Pine Tree Point
Resort in Alexandria Bay and other locations. For over 30 years
the Renicks were able to enjoy their attachment to the St.
Lawrence River by spending summers at their home on Slim Island
in the St. Lawrence, Mr. Renick was a member of the First
Presbyterian Church of Canton; the American Personnel and
Guidance Association; the Northern Zone Personnel and Guidance
Association; the American Psychologists Association; and other
related organizations for some thirty years. He was also a
40-year and founding member of the St. Lawrence chapter of the
Phi Delta Kappa, an international education fraternity.
Survivors in addition to his wife Wanda are a sister, Patricia
Louise Renick Dabney; a nephew Richard Allan Hill; and a niece,
Angela Sue Hall, all of Danville, Illinois.

L. Rodney Norman, 59, 7 Debra Drive,
Potsdam and formerly of Canton and Gouverneur. Mr.
Norman died Monday morning, March 3, 2003 at Claxton Hepburn
Hospital where he had been a patient since February 27th.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at
the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton with Rev. James M. Brand,
officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday
afternoon and evening, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery in the Spring. If friends so desire,

Station, PO Box 304, Canton, 13617. Surviving are three sons and
daughter- in- laws, Rodney J. & Tina, Lisbon; Richard W.
& Stacie, Potsdam; Jeffery A. & Kathy, Canton; a
daughter and son-in-law, Brenda L. & Keevin Patchin,
Gouverneur; two brothers, Darwin W., Ogdensburg; Phil H., Lake
Tahoe, NV; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Predeceasing Mr. Norman are a sister, Joyce Johnson; two
brothers, Robert "Buster" and Douglas; one son, Lew
R.; and one grandson, Zachary Patchin. Born on April 7, 1943, in
Canton, a son of Wallace & Mildred June Havington Norman, he
attended Canton High School. On February 24, 1965, he married
Sharon Rose Burcume at the Canton United Methodist Church with
Rev. Calvin Zimmer officiating. The marriage ended in divorce.
During high school he helped his father with digging graves
primarily at the Evergreen Cemetery in Canton before entering
the U.S. Air Force but was later given a medical discharge. Mr.
Norman drove mail truck from Syracuse to Potsdam for a year
prior to working at United Parcel Services where he drove
tractor trailer. After leaving UPS, he was employed by various
new car dealers including Scott Ford, Peters Ford, Dodds Motors
and then Ford Motor Company before working for various other
area used car dealers in sales. Mr. Norman worked a total of 39
years in the area automobile businesses. Mr. Norman was a past
Boy Scout leader, a member of the Girls Pee Wee Softball program
and helped build the last ball field at Ike Noble Pee Wee
fields. He also was an avid NASCAR fan.

Beth A. Campbell, 83, Grasse River
Apartments and formerly of 1 West Street, Canton; funeral
services will be held graveside in the spring at Fair View
Cemetery, with Rev. Michael P. Catanzaro, pastor, First
Presbyterian Church of Canton, officiating. Ms. Campbell died
February 27, 2003. There will be no calling hours. If friends so

Arrangements are with the Lawrence Funeral Home. Mrs. Campbell
died Thursday afternoon at United Helpers Canton Nursing Home,
where she had been a patient since August 20, 1998. Surviving
are two daughters and their husbands Linda and William Van
Order, Franklin, North Carolina, Jacqueline and Clint Crabtree,
San Feranda, California, three grandsons, William F. Van Order,
Jr., Battenrough, Louisiana, Jonathan M. Van Order, Switzerland,
Robert H. Van Order, York, Pennsylvania, four great
grandchildren, one brother Charles Alexander and his wife
Margaret, Canton, one sister; Mrs. Emily Gaffney, Sequoit, NY,
and several nieces and nephews. Born February 21, 1917 in
Canton, she was a daughter of Charles Herbert and Grace
Elizabeth Wainwright Alexander and graduated from Canton High
School in 1936. Later she graduated from Central City Business
School in Syracuse. In 1944, she married Jay Fowler Campbell in
Liverpool. M r. Campbell died in May 1969. For thirteen years
Mrs. Campbell worked as a kitchen aid at United Helpers Canton
Nursing Home. She also worked at Green Thumb for 10 years and
served at the Thrift Shop and Literacy Volunteers, as she
enjoyed giving to others. Mrs. Campbell was a member of the
Presbyterian Women's Organization and a past member of the Post
Script Club.

Gene F. Bronson, 51, 45 Gouverneur
Street, Canton, died Sunday evening, January 13, 2003
at his home. Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday,
January 16, at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 40 Hopewell Street
in Albany with Rev. Kenneth Doyle, pastor, officiating. A
memorial service will be held on February 1, at 11 a.m. in St.
Mary?s Church, Canton with Rev. Timothy G. Canaan, pastor,
officiating. There will be no calling hours. If friends so

Canton, 13617. Surviving besides his wife are a son, Brendan; a
daughter, Kate, both of Saratoga Springs; his father, Eugene M.,

three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Dyer, Albany, NY; Mrs. Joe
(Elizabeth) Epstein, Latham, NY; Miss Patricia Bronson, Boynton
Beach, FL; One brother, Kevin, of Batavia, NY; three nieces and
one nephew. Born July 10, 1951, in Jackson, Michigan, a son of
Eugene and Margaret Goetz Bronson, he graduated from Canton High
School in 1969. In May of 1973, he received a Bachelor?s of
Science in Accounting at SUNY Albany and in May of 1981 received
his Masters in Accounting from SUNY Albany. On July 14, 2000, in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, he married Cheryl Lynn Rosenberg Miller.
Mr. Bronson started his professional career in September of 1973
as an Accountant at Deloitte & Touche in New York, NY where
he worked until June 1974 when he became employed at Ernst &
Young in Albany, New York as the Senior Accountant. From January
of 1977 until May of 1981, Mr. Bronson was employed at Siena
College in Loudonville, New York, as an Assistant Professor,
teaching accounting. After leaving Siena College, he taught
Advanced Accounting from September of 1981 until December of
1984 at the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York. In January
of 1978 Mr. Bronson began his own business as a Certified Public
Accounting Albany and continued in that capacity until December
of 1984 when he became the President and CEO of the American
Leasing Associations, Inc. in Albany. In November of 2000 he
began employment as the Vice President of Finance with Commerce
Technologies Inc. in Clifton Park, New York where he remained
employed until starting Bronson Software Solutions, Inc. in
March of 2001. Mr. Bronson was a founding member of the
"Fishing for Kids" organization.

Cemetery. Mr. Barbour died Friday, January 3, 2003 at United

Mr. Barbour are his first wife, Betty; A sister, Cora Barbour;
and Two Brothers, Donald A. and Myron. Born on April 26, 1921 in
Canton, New York, the son of Mande L. Brooks and Elmer S.
Barbour, Mr. Barbour graduated from Hugh C. Williams High School
in Canton in 1939. He went on to attend the Albany Business
College in Albany, NY, and graduated in 1941. Upon his return to
the North Country, Mr. Barbour was employed as Assistant
Employment Director at St. Lawrence Plant Aluminum Co. of
America, Massena, NY. In 1942, Mr. Barbour left the Plant to
enter the armed forces until January 26, 1946 upon the
completion of three years service. Two years of his service were
spent in the Inspector General's Department, Pacific Ocean Area.
On February 26, 1946, He entered partnership with his father in
the family business, then known as Barbour's Shoe, Luggage and
Harness store. Frederick was married to Elizabeth (Betty)
Bassett, Canton, on October 26, 1946 at the First Presbyterian
Church in Canton. On August 1, 1954, Frederick became sole
owner, expanding the men's sportswear to include ladies sports
apparel under the name "Barbour's". Business grew
rapidly over the next few years becoming one of the finest men's
sportswear and ladies' apparel stores in the St. Lawrence Valley
and surrounding area. On July 21, 1984, Frederick married Ruth
Costa Blankman in the Unitarian Universalist Church, Canton with
Rev. Max Coots officiating. Mr. Barbour was a member on the
Board of Directors at the Canton Federal Savings and Loan from
January 1, 1952 until September, 1989. He was the Director
Emeritus until September, 1999. Many people will remember Fred
Barbour for being a successful businessman in the town of
Canton. He served his community including college students,
academic members and the townspeople for many years. He
represented dozens of people up and down Main Street in Canton
and its tributaries who made Canton an attractive, welcoming
place in which to live, shop and build our lives.
